Overweight and obesity, previously considered a problem only in developing countries, are increasing significantly in low- and middle-income countries, especially in urban areas. The majority of overweight or obese children live in developing countries, where growth is 30 percent higher than in developed countries.

We often get into hurtful arguments about what is fat, what is “just fat” or “I’m fat but I’m fit.” Dr. Stacie J Stephenson, aka “The VibrantDoc,” is a renowned medical leader and author of a new self-care book.

BMI has been widely used by doctors since the 1830s, but recently scientists have questioned its validity. This is because BMI does not take into account many factors such as muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition and gender differences.

BMI also does not take into account where body fat is stored. For example, belly fat, which is visceral fat, is one of the most harmful types of fat in the body. It accumulates around organs such as the liver, releasing substances that can interfere with the body’s ability to balance energy. Even people who look thin can have a lot of visceral fat. So while their BMI may tell them they are healthy, they may be at higher risk for health problems.

BMI is widely used to assess and measure weight and obesity because it’s easy for doctors to take during visits, but it misses some important factors that can affect someone’s health, even if they’re considered an “average” BMI.

Ok Samantha, how do I measure my body fat?! While there is no universally accepted method for BMI charting, here are a few methods that are well supported by the scientific community.

I haven’t tried this meter myself, so I can’t say for sure that it’s accurate, but it seems to have a good buzz around it.

If you’ve ever met a personal trainer, they may have calculated your body fat percentage using a BIA device or skin scale (which I’ll explain in the next section). BIA is a commonly used method for assessing body composition, especially body fat and muscle mass. In BIA, a weak electric current is passed through the body and the voltage is measured to assess the body’s resistance (resistance). It takes into account water weight, bone density, and body fat and muscle mass to provide an accurate analysis of body composition. [2

If you’re not skinny, this weight test might not be for you, but rest assured that it’s an accurate way to determine your body fat percentage. The skin saddle test uses a thickness device that actually attaches fat to your skin. Measurements are taken from many parts of the body, including the abdomen, shoulder blade, arm and thighs. Since this is a manual test, the skin saddle test may be + – 5% due to human error.
