The first thing you want to do is remove as much oil as possible before you start. We don’t want to push the oil further into the fabric, so I prefer to use an old cloth and gently wipe or wipe off the oil. If the fabric is white or light in color, use white fabric to avoid color transfer to the fabric.

A great way to do this is to take your oilcloth and place the dirty area on a clean cloth. Then wipe the oil stain on a clean cloth using another cloth. Repeat these steps until the oil stops flowing onto the clean cloth.

The next step is to wash the oil off the fabric. Use the hottest water possible. If hot water should not be used, hot or cold water can be used. Warm water is best because it helps break down fat.

Now that we have prepared the affected area, we can treat the oil stain. I highly recommend Dawn Blue dishwashing detergent. I recommend this soap because it is the best for dissolving oil and grease. It is also gentle. I’ve tried many different dishwashing detergents over the years, including other versions of Dawn, and nothing compares.

To remove the stains, we start with a small amount of dish soap. Pour a few drops of dish soap onto the oil stain and let it sit for a minute or two. If necessary, you can use an old toothbrush and spread the soap, but do not rub it into the stain.

After the soap has rested for a few minutes, you have a few options. If you haven’t added too much detergent, you can just throw the clothes in the washing machine and run it on a regular cycle.

We’re almost done! Wash the garment in a regular machine wash with liquid detergent (I find liquid detergent works best) for this material, then let dry. I love when household products make everyday life easier. Since discovering how well Dawn’s blue dish soap removes almost all grease stains, I no longer fear oil stains.

Finally, I would like to say that the best way to remove even the toughest stains is to treat them while they are fresh. I’ve found that the hardest part of cleaning grease stains is rarely the oil/grease itself, it’s usually other dust and other things stuck to the grease.
