. Nothing like a perfect, comfortable white tee, right? Confession number two…I’m also one of those people who gets really gross, yellow pit stains on my white shirts, and when they get bad, I throw them away!!! Or at least I have in the past. Going through my closet, pulling out my absolute favorite, most comfortable white t-shirt the other day, and sadly, that time has passed…or has it?

Here’s Why You Get Pit Stains (and How To Get Rid Of Them)

I did some searching online and found several recommendations, but most were advertisements for one product or another. I wanted to try a few different solutions without feeling pressured to say that one particular product or brand is better than another, and I was hoping to use what I already have in my cleaning closet or pantry. I just wanted to find an honest solution that would keep me in my favorite shirt, so I scoured my closet for suggested supplies and decided to try these three methods – see my results below!

There are options when it comes to a great stain remover! The spots on your armpits don’t have to stay there forever. It’s time to do what you can to get the best results, so those sweat stains are a thing of the past!

I saw it first, I had the supply, but I’ll admit it also caught my eye because it was told to me by my great aunt Margaret. It was full of what we call “old world knowing”. Pit Stop

Start by filling your sink with warm water and vinegar. I didn’t want to line my sink for too long, so I put mine in a large bowl, which worked really well. Place the cloth in the water/vinegar to soak for 20-30 minutes.

While the dressing is soaking, mix the remaining ingredients together to form a paste. It actually did more than I needed, so I used some of the leftovers to clean the stainless steel sink – worked like a charm!

After the soak time is up, wring the cloth until it’s damp, then use the peroxide/salt/soda paste you made and rub it into the pit stain with a toothbrush.

I let it rip for a while and then threw the shirt in the washer for a regular cycle.

The Best Do It Yourself Deodorant Stain Remover Solutions

I’ve never been a fan of my hands or my kitchen smelling like vinegar. I gave it the old ‘college try’ but the solution didn’t work for my pesky pit spots. That shirt improved … just not enough, especially for all the effort! I really didn’t like the time this process took. Here is the result:

It made more sense to me when I found this method online. Dish soap…soap is always good and I pull out my favorite brand if my pits are too oily. Peroxide… natural bleach. I mean, it bleached my hair pretty well all those summers back in the 80s, right? And baking soda…is a wonderful, natural exfoliant that cleans everything easily, so why not pit stains?

I found the basic principle for this online, but it doesn’t really say “how” so I’ll tell you what I did. It only makes sense to start with soap. First, I applied a generous amount to the general area of the pit stain on my shirt. Then I sprinkled a good amount of baking soda on top – enough that I could make a thick paste with just those two ingredients and a toothbrush and gently massage it around. I then added the peroxide and let it sit for a few minutes, hoping that the foam it created would help lift the yellow stain and remove it from the fabric. Finally, I threw the shirt in the washer for a normal wash cycle.

While I find this method more convenient than the first and certainly easier and less smelly, it still doesn’t completely solve my real dilemma with shirts with holes. Again, like the first test, the shirt was definitely better, just not spotless. I liked it better because I had better control over the ingredients I used, so it didn’t seem like such a waste, but unfortunately, it still wasn’t a winner. Here are my results:

The Secret To Getting Rid Of Sweat Stains Is Already In Your Kitchen Pantry

Hopefully you already have Oxi Clean in your cleaning cupboard – a year ago I discovered OxiClean White Revive and it’s my new favorite addition to my wardrobe. I’m a bit of a freak when it comes to good smelling laundry and this totally does it for me!

So yeah, now I realize I’m a bit of a hypocrite because I said at the beginning of this article that I don’t want to be forced to use advertised and sponsored cleaning products. Let me just say that this comment is not sponsored, but this is the only solution that works for my pale yellow t-shirt, so I’d be happy to be a paid spokesperson – LOL. I’m equally happy to share my honest, unsolicited opinion with you.

This was the easiest method I found. I just dissolved a scoop of Oxy Clean in water.

Again, I didn’t want to line the sink too long, so I used a large kitchen sink and room temperature tap water. As the OxiClean dissolved, I laid my shirt out to soak. I used a small amount of Oxy Clean on my toothbrush for about half an hour and for extra measure, I brushed it directly onto the pit stain, then put it back in the bowl to continue soaking.

Mum’s Three Ingredient Solution Will Get Yellow Armpit Stains Out Of White Clothing In Minutes

Because the sweat stains on my shirt were so intense (I know…wow, gross, but what’s a girl to do?!) and because I really love my shirt, I left it to soak overnight and then Throw it all away – water, OxiClean and put the shirt in the machine for a normal wash cycle.

Yep – I was pleasantly surprised with the results, plus it got soaked all over my shirt and smelled so fresh too!

I hated to say it, but I didn’t mean it to sound like a commercial. OxiClean White Revive was the easiest, least time consuming and used the fewest products…and it worked the best! I can use my favorite white shirt for a long time, and as mentioned before, my shirt smells great – bonus!

I will say that none of the methods I’ve used have returned my shirt to “like new” condition, but that’s to be expected. Another disclaimer – I had planned to try a bleach product (to remain nameless), but I had two concerns about bleaching when it came to my favorite shirt.

Goodbye Sweat Stains

First, bleach usually eats away at the cotton and creates small holes. I could use a lot, but that has been my experience in the past and I didn’t want to create pits and blemishes in my pits.

Second, the advice to use hot water to remove bleach stains is one of the other laundry habits my mom instilled in me and I can’t help but think – never use heat on a stain; No hot water, no hot dryer as the heat will set the stain. I haven’t tried bleaching for these two reasons.

In the end, I’m happy with the results I’m getting from OxiClean, and I’m going through my closets and drawers to do a special soaking session for all my whites. I also look forward to not having to buy so many new shirts in the future!
