What Is A Good Size Area Rug For Living Room

Rugs are one of our favorite ways to add warmth and interest to a room and really define a space. They help transform a space and perfect it, but it’s not always easy to shop for them and know exactly what size is best for your space. Today we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the right size for your space, and we’re also sharing some of our favorite rugs!

How To Choose The Right Size Rug For Your Space

When buying a rug, the first thing to consider is the size, shape and layout of the room. You need to make sure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the space, as a rug that is too small will make the space feel cramped. And it feels heavy, and so does an oversized rug. That’s why measurement is so important.

Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, you have different design options to choose from for a rug. There are three main pieces of furniture for rug arrangements: the front legs on the rug, all the furniture legs on the rug, or all the furniture on the rug except the coffee table (use the image created below for reference). If you want all your furniture off the rug except for the coffee table, make sure the rug is at least as wide as your sofa.

Once you think you’ve decided on the look and size, you can use painters tape to mimic a rug to help better visualize the rug in your room.

You’ll use a similar process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Be sure to consider the shape of the room, consider where the doors are in the space, and pay attention to any other furniture in the room (ottoman, end of bed benches, etc.) . If you have a bench or ottoman at the end of the bed, you’ll want to make sure the rug is wide enough to sit on and has at least 12 inches beyond it.
